Obituary of Roger Steele

Roger F. Steele, age 89, of Corning, NY, peacefully left this world of natural causes November 17, 2018 while at his winter home in Florida.

He was born October 4,1929 to Bertha (Rogers) and Sydney Steele in Corning, NY. He was raised on his family farm, graduated from Northside Blodgett High School, and attended the Agricultural School at Cornell University. He owned and operated sand & gravel, construction and concrete companies, and invested heavily in real estate.

He married Patricia Gill on August 6,1955 and made their home and raised 5 daughters in East Corning. After losing his first wife to cancer in 1992, he married Lucy Basurco on June 22,1997.

Roger was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend. He enjoyed sailing, horseback riding, waterskiing, singing, dancing, and most of all running his equipment. He was a SeaBee in the Navy Construction Reserves and a board member of the Three River Development Corporation and the Construction Industry Exchange, as well as a member of the National Sand & Gravel Association, Chemung County Chamber of Commerce, and the Greater Corning Area Chamber of Commerce. He was hired by the Army Corps of Engineers to help coordinate the regional recovery efforts for the 1972 Agnes Flood. He was an honorary member of the East Corning Fire Department and a parishioner of All Saints Parish.

Roger was predeceased by his first wife Patricia J. Steele, parents Bertha and Sydney Steele, sister Vivian (Hank) Ehrhardt, and granddaughter Taylor McMillan. He is survived by his wife Lucy Steele, her children Gus and Sandra Larrauri; daughters Patricia (Russell) Ozer, Vicki (Stephen) Rossettie, Mary Ann (Mark) McMillan, Kathryn Steele, Judith (Jim) Reilly; grandchildren Spencer Ozer, Anthony (Josephine), Leah, Tricia, Mattea and Stephen Rossettie, Theo and Gabrielle McMillan, Cameron and Sydney Reilly, Koen Steele, and Delaney Cook; great-grandson Theodore Rossettie, and numerous nephews and nieces. Roger was a very generous and grateful man, and he loved creating fun for others.

Calling hours will be Sunday, November 25 from 3-6 PM at Haughey Funeral Home, Inc., 216 E. First Street, Corning, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, November 26, 2018 at 9:30 AM at St. Mary's Church, 155 State Street, Corning, NY with Father Matthew Jones officiating and Father Lew Brown as concelebrate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Corning.
