Obituary of Shirley Fernandes

Shirley Ann Fernandes, age 81, of Corning, NY died Sunday, May 13, 2018 at Absolut Care at Three Rivers in Painted Post, NY.

Shirley was born on August 14, 1936 in Corning to Joseph and Augusta (Andrade) Fernandes. She was a graduate of St. Mary's School, CFA (Corning Free Academy), Nazareth College, and received a Master's Degree from St. Joseph's Seminary and College, Dunwoodie with a Master of Arts in Religious Studies.

From the early beginnings of Anawim (founded in 1975), Shirley served Fr. Francis Marino, as his personal secretary and continued through the years as secretary of the community. She was instrumental in organizing Father's works and helping to bring forth a key element of Anawim's spirituality, the Liturgy, through "Pondering the Word," Anawim's Liturgical Meditations. Shirley served for many years organizing formation programs for youth and adults in the States and in the Philippines. Her "hands" and her gifts can still be seen in the many works of Anawim to this day.

Shirley was also employed by Corning Glass Works.

She is survived by her sisters, Mary and Louise Fernandes of Corning; sister-in-law, Mary Fernandes of Campbell; nieces and nephews, Mary Jo (Mark) Powley of Campbell, Ann Marie (Melvin) Calkins of Campbell, Joseph (Cindy) Fernandes of Savona, Tangy Fernandes of Campbell, and Anthony Fernandes of Campbell; several great and great-great nieces and nephews. Shirley was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Augusta Fernandes and her brother, Joseph Fernandes.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, May 18th from 2 - 4 PM at Haughey Funeral Home, Inc., 216 E. First Street in Corning. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Noon on Saturday, May 19th at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 222 Dodge Avenue in Corning. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
