Obituary of Joseph E. Murphy

Joseph E. Murphy, age 82, of Horseheads, New York and St. Philip, Barbados, died Wednesday, October 27, 2021 at Guthrie Corning Hospital.

Joseph was born on August 7, 1939 in New York City to Eugene and Lillian (Glosson) Murphy. He was a graduate of Seward Park High School, New York and attended City College, New York.

He retired from the Town of Hempstead, Hempstead, New York in 2005 after 25 years of service as a civil engineer. In 2008 he returned to the Town of Hempstead as a consultant until he moved from Brightwaters, NY to Horseheads, NY in 2011.

Joe was an avid gardener. His garden in Barbados was opened twice by the Barbados Horticultural Society as part of their Open Garden program to show what can be done in a garden subjected to the harsh environment of living near the ocean and being subjected to sea spray. He loved to entertain and always did so with great attention to detail, including making beautiful flower arrangements, most often just using the flowers from his garden.

He enjoyed swimming and would spend long days on the beach at the Barbados Yacht Club, enjoying the sun, the sand and long swims in the sea.

Joe loved to travel and he and Ed have traveled to 48 countries on 5 continents making many new friends along the way. He also had a passion for cars, always keeping them in immaculate condition.

He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Corning, the Corning Museum of Glass, the Rockwell Museum, the Barbados Horticultural Society, the Barbados Historical Society, and the Barbados Yacht Club.

He is survived by his spouse of 50 years, Edward Thal; son, Matthew (Kathy) Murphy of Massapequa, NY; daughter, Karen (John) Evans of Chester, VA; step son, Edward (Maureen) Thal, Jr. of Scotch Plains, NJ; step daughter, Marcie (Peter) Coffin of Ridgefield, CT; seven grandchildren; Matthew, Courtney, Jackie, Jack, Sean, Will and Chip, and many nieces and nephews. Joseph was predeceased by his ten siblings.

A memorial service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, 33 East First Street in Corning, NY on Saturday, November 13, 2021 at 12 noon.

Those wishing to make memorial donations can do so to Christ Episcopal Church, Corning, NY or to The American Cancer Society.
