Obituary of Simon A. St. Laurent

Simon Albert St. Laurent, age 79, died Saturday, June 12, 2021 in Ithaca, NY.

He was born on July 14, 1941 to Simon N. and Rose Labrie St. Laurent in Nashua, NH. In 1951, the family moved to Biloxi, MS where Simon developed his life-long love of fishing. He graduated from St. Leo College Prep School in St. Leo, FL followed by the University of Notre Dame where he was in the General Program of Liberal Studies and NROTC. Upon graduation, Simon joined the U.S. Navy and served on destroyers, most notably in the U.S. Blockade during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. Following his discharge from the Navy, Simon attended the University of Chicago Business School from which he received an MBA. There he met his wife, Mary, while both were living at International House.

In 1966, Simon joined Corning Glass Works in the auditing department. The following year, he and Mary joined the Peace Corps and were assigned to an MBA Program in Peru. Simon worked with cooperatives, small businesses, and a development corporation, where he learned skills he used through his international career with Corning. Upon his return, he worked in finance and accounting at Corning plants in State College, PA, Bradford, PA, Corning, NY, and Seoul, Korea. He was involved from the beginning with the Samsung-Corning joint venture and continued his association there until his retirement in 2001. He also worked on Corning projects in India, Mexico, Germany, China, and Malaysia.

In his retirement, Simon served on the Advisory Board of the Steuben County Office for the Aging. He loved traveling to different places in the United States and internationally, frequently combining it with his love of saltwater fishing. In 2019, Simon and Mary moved to Kendal at Ithaca.

He is survived by Mary, his wife of 55 years; son, Simon George (Angelika) and grandchildren, Sungiva and Konrad of Ithaca; son, Andrew Mark (Beth Levine) and grandchildren, Ariela and Elias, of Brooklyn, NY; niece, Charlotte (Paul) Delcambre of Biloxi, MS; great nieces, Paula Snyder and Rachel Hamm; brother-in-law, James (Laila) Cuddy of Auburn, NY; sister-in-law, Ellen (Robert) Loretan of Sarasota, FL.

He was predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Pauline Gee and Helen Diegelman.
