Obituary of Lon J. Bennett

Lon J. Bennett, age 95, of Corning, NY, died Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at home surrounded by his loving wife and children.

Lon was born, Orlando Joseph Turiziani, on April 15, 1925 to Samuel and Mary (Fraboni) Turiziani in Watkins Glen, NY.

Lon graduated from Northside Blodgett High School and immediately went to work for Corning Glass Works in 1942. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943, serving in WWII. He served with the Coastal Antisubmarine Patrol, flying the Atlantic and Pacific coast lines to protect the U.S. from submarine attacks.

In 1945, Lon returned to Corning after serving in the war and returned to work at Corning Glass Works. It was at this time that he legally changed his name to Lon Joseph Bennett.

Lon married Vera Vaughn on June 29, 1946. They were married by Father Guilfoyle and recently celebrated 74 years of marriage.

During Lon’s employment at CGW, he worked at the Fallbrook plant, eventually being promoted to Senior Associate in manufacturing. Lon was highly respected and had a wealth of knowledge in the manufacturing of glass tubing. He retired in 1987, but he continued as a consultant in the glass field until recently. He received his 75-year service pin in 2017. He currently had 78 years of service with them.

Lon loved and cherished his family. He was especially proud of his Italian heritage and was often referred to as the “TOP WOP” by family members. He had a hug for everyone and always said “never shake a hand when you can hug a friend”.

Lon enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golf. He could always be seen at his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events through the years. He also enjoyed planting his gladiolas (his favorite flower) and vegetable garden every spring and watching them grow through the summer. He was also a lifetime member of the Loyal Order of the Moose.

Lon will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Vera; daughter, Linda (Fred) Lenhard; sons, Michael (Billie Jean) Bennett, Daniel (Annie) Bennett, and Jerry (Linda) Bennett; brother, Marvin Cody; 11 grandchildren; and numerous great and great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
