Gerald Raker, Jr.

Obituary of Gerald A. Raker, Jr.

Gerald "Jerry" A. Raker, Jr. passed away Sunday, December 8, 2019 at his home in Painted Post, NY at the age of 52. He was born on March 15, 1967 in Corning, NY to Gerald A. Raker, Sr. (who predeceased him) and Gloria (Bedient) Raker.

Jerry worked for several years as a fork lift driver for Weyerhaeuser Paper Co. in Rochester, NY. He moved to Tacoma, WA at the age of 32 where he was employed as a painter until he started his own company, "Patriot's Painting". He was a die-hard Patriot's fan from the time he was a young man, thus the name he established for his company.

Returning to the Corning area in December of 2017, Jerry worked as a fill-in bartender at the Crystal City VFW Post 524 on Baker Street in Corning and soon began thinking of the patrons there as his "other" family. He is highly thought of by those who knew him and has been described as being respectful, sensitive, and compassionate, caring and possessing a gentle soul.

Four-wheeling with his brother, Mark and company, canoeing, dogs (Angel, Molly and Lexi), music, and Tuesday night Trivia at the VFW were some of the activities he enjoyed. Jerry loved his country and was very patriotic. He proudly enjoyed serving and supporting our great nation's veterans. Additionally, watching "Baldy", the bald eagle who often perched in a tree across the Cohocton River from the river house where he resided until October of this year was a treasured experience.

Jerry is survived by his mother, Gloria Ficklin; stepmother, Sharyn Raker; daughters, Kaylee and Sydney in Tacoma, WA; stepdaughters, Sarah Raloo, Charise Peterson; brothers, Mark (Cindy) Raker, Jim Raker, and Jeff Raker; sisters, Yolanda Raker, Stacey Ramsdell and Kelly (Chris) Argetsinger; uncles, John (Peggy) Raker, and Ron (Norma) Raker; niece, Andrea Ramsdell and nephew Austin Morgan; great-niece, Bayleigh Griffin and nephew, Nathan (Nate) Stempin.

He was predeceased by his stepdaughter, Ashley Barney and uncles, Doug Raker and Andrew "Buddy" Bedient.

Knowing Jerry's preference for privacy, the family decided there will be no calling hours or service. Instead, a "Celebration of Life" will be held on Sunday, December 15, 2019 from 3:00 p.m. 'til?? at the VFW, Post 524, 281 Baker Street in Corning, in honor of his memory.

Jerry's family entrusted his care to Haughey Funeral Home, Inc. .
