Carolyn C. English


Carolyn C. English, age 94, formerly of Painted Post, NY died Thursday, September 23, 2021 in Rochester, NY. 


Carolyn was born on February 20, 1927 in Corning, NY and is the daughter of Leon and Ruth (Lipps) Cilley. She graduated from Corning Northside High School, a member of the National Honor Society, in June 1944, earned her Associate of Arts degree from Corning Community College in June 1956 and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Elmira College in June 1968.


She worked for Corning Community College as an assistant librarian and in the Graphic Arts Department. She was awarded the Paul Harris Fellow from Corning Rotary. Carolyn enjoyed music and played the recorder and violin both as a soloist and in ensembles. She was interested in the activities of the Boy Scouts of America, and together with her husband participated in a number of jamborees as a support person. She loved animals, both her pets and others in need of protection.


She is survived by three sons: David (Marcia) English of Penn Yan, NY, Douglas (Rebecca) English of Rochester, NY, and Thomas English of Painted Post; grandchildren, Eric English of Durham, NH, Lynne (Michael) Spies of Great Falls, VA, Brian English of Rochester, and Andrew English of Rochester; great grandchildren: Nicholas, Maya, and June Spies of Great Falls, VA and Jerome and Liam English of Berlin, Germany; sister, Lavinia Sala of Elizabethton, TN, and several nieces and nephews. 


Carolyn was predeceased by her brothers, Rev. Bishop Roger, Alan, and Franklin Cilley; and sisters, Muriel Hickey and Shirley Hawk.


A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family with Rev. David Preisendanz officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Painted Post.
