Patricia Ann (Kahn) Van Etten, age 80, of Caton, NY passed away Tuesday, June 1, 2021 at Guthrie Corning Hospital in Corning, NY.
Pat was born January 15, 1941 in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of Jack and Bernice Kahn. She was raised in Corning and attended Northside Blodgett school.
She married Gordon K. Van Etten on November 1, 1959, and they celebrated 62 years of marriage and raised three children together.
Along with being a loving wife and mother, Pat worked as a waitress for many years before becoming a licensed beautician. She opened and operated a hair salon (The Mop Shoppe) in Caton Center for 32 years, where it was the social gathering place of the town. When the hair dryers were running, the hens were clucking. Pat loved to cook and bake, and she was the first to bring a hot meal to someone in need. She cared for her customers (friends) and would even do their hair after they passed away. She retired as a beautician in 2006. Pat was a phenomenal seamstress, quilter, crafter, and homemaker. Whether the family was out cutting firewood or her boys were building their houses, she was affectionately known as “Picnic Patty” as no one went hungry when she was around. Pat loved spending time with her four grandchildren and great grandsons.
Pat suffered a stroke in 2008, and after rehab she was cared for by her loving husband until her death. Words cannot explain the love and devotion they had for each other.
She is survived by her husband, Gordon K. Van Etten; daughter, Laurie (Don) Marsh; sons, Gordon (Debbie) Van Etten II and Scott Van Etten; grandchildren: Janet Marsh, Taylor Marsh, Tori Van Etten, and Allen Van Etten; and great grandsons, Landyn and Finley.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday, June 6, 2021 from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM at Haughey Funeral Home, Inc., 216 E. First St., Corning, NY with a memorial service to follow at 4:00 pm with Father Patrick Connor officiating.
