Fernand J. Paulin (Fern), age 88, of Horseheads, NY, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, April 25, 2021 at Appleridge Senior Living in Horseheads.
He was born on March 16, 1933 in Athol, MA to Joachim and Georgiana (Chiasson) Paulin. After graduating from Athol High School in 1951, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and retired after 20 years of active military service in 1972. He continued his service working for the U.S. State Department in the Foreign Service until his retirement in 1989.
He met the love of his life, Maria del Carmen (Menendez) in Madrid, Spain in December 1956, and they were married less than a year later in August 1957. Together, they raised their family and traveled the world including various assignments at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., Spain, Germany, Turkey, England, Ecuador, Cuba, Portugal & Switzerland before settling in Madrid, Spain. He took great pleasure in developing and maintaining lifelong friendships with co-workers and families across the globe. However, his greatest joy was spending time with his family. In 2009, Fern & Carmen moved to Corning, NY to be close to their family and then to Appleridge Senior Living in Horseheads, NY.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Maria del Carmen Paulin; son, Michael Paulin (Eileen); daughter, Ana Paulin (Matthew P. Smith); grandchildren, Thomas Paulin (Vanessa Barnes) and Kimberly Paulin (Joey Lackey); great grandchildren, Brock and Elliott Paulin; siblings: Clarence Paulin, Norma Paulin, Anita Paulin, Georgine Paulin, and Marc Paulin; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents, Joachim and Georgiana, and his sister, Yvette Paulin Maillet.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, April 30th at 11:00 AM at St. Catherine of Siena, 51 Maple Street, Addison, NY with Father Patrick Connor officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn National Cemetery in Elmira, NY.
The family wishes to thank the Bethany Community Home Care staff at Appleridge, the entire Staff at Appleridge Senior Living, and the Care First Blue team for their caring and loving support.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Fern’s name to a charity of your choice.
