Michael Mattone, age 89, of Corning, NY went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 31, 2021 at Corning Hospital after a short illness.
Mike was born on April 24, 1931 in Ceccano Frosinone, Italy to Pietro and Vincenza (nee Bruni) Mattone. He was one of seven children. After serving in the Italian Military Police, Mike emigrated to the United States in 1954, where he would become a citizen and live out the remainder of his life.
Mike would meet the love of his life, Shirley (Benjamin) in 1956, and in May 2008 they celebrated 50 years of marriage. They would spend 55 years together until her death in 2014.
Mike worked for Ingersoll-Rand and retired from Dresser-Rand after over 45 years of service. He received his 55 Year Service pin in 2011, with his Daughter at his side.
In 2004 Mike was honored with being named a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow.
Mike loved to garden and would share his fresh grown vegetables with his family and neighbors. He truly had a green thumb, everything he planted grew in abundance. He was even known to bring plants back to life.
Mike also had a love of all animals. He would feed the pigeons sesame seeds, the squirrels peanuts in the shell, and any stray cat was always given water and some cat food. He could always be seen driving about town with any one of three special Old English Sheepdogs.
Mike is survived by his daughter, Pamela (Stan) Mattone Jerzak of Corning; his sister Domenica Mattone and his brother Pierino (Pasqualina) Mattone both of Ceccano Italy, as well as several nieces and nephews both here in the US and in Italy, and his special Old English Sheepdog Haley.
He was predeceased by both parents, his wife Shirley, and son Michael S. Mattone; his sisters Angela Mattone, and Antonia Mattone; brothers, Domenico Mattone, and Mariano Mattone.
