Helen M. Bailey

Helen Aileen Mitchell Bailey, a Christian, 83, of Canandaigua, New York, formerly of Painted Post, New York, passed away at home in the early morning of January 16, 2021. She was born September 13, 1937, in Corning, New York, to Ruth (Palmer) and James Mitchell. She married her High School sweetheart Wayne Bailey. Helen and Wayne met in September of 1951 in band; Wayne played the tuba and Helen the clarinet. Helen graduated from Painted Post High School in 1955 and graduated from State Teachers College of Plattsburgh in 1959 with a degree in nursing. She was a school nurse teacher in Elmira and retired from Savona Central School in 1980.

 

She was a member of Corning Area Woman’s Club and served as a past president. Since nursery school Helen attended and was an active member of the United Church of Painted Post. For years she was in charge of the Lady’s Coordinating Committee, and organized many bazaars and Church dinners. She served as an elder and deacon (Care Committee), and helped to provide snacks for Vacation Bible School. Helen was a determined woman, enjoyed flowers, gardening, baking, and traveling, and liked lighthouses, hummingbirds and loons. She always took care of everyone else. Helen spent time with her family on both Seneca and Keuka lakes.

 

She is survived by daughters Beth Thomas & her husband, Ray, and Amie Reif & her husband, Mark; grandchildren Grace and Grant Thomas, and Samantha & her fiancé Kevin Cavanaugh, Calvin and Sarah Jordan Reif; sister-in-law Lorraine Truax and nieces Rebecca, Stephanie and Elizabeth. A private service will be held at the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the United Church of Painted Post, 201 N. Hamilton Street, Painted Post, NY 14870.
