Barbara H. Regan, age 80, of Painted Post, NY died unexpectedly on Thursday, December 10, 2020 at NY Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York, NY.
Barb was born on November 14, 1940 in Elmira, NY to Alfred and Helen (Kiersznowski) Hussey. After graduating from Notre Dame High School, Barb earned her bachelor’s in nursing from D’Youville College in 1962. She started her nursing career in Elmira shortly after graduation. She worked for several years at Arnot Ogden Medical Center, and in 1971 she earned her master’s in education from Elmira College.
She married Thomas Regan, Sr. on June 28, 1969 at St. Patrick’s Church in Elmira and was happily married for 38 years until his passing in February of 2008.
Barbara was a devoted wife, mother, and friend. She welcomed everyone into her home and always wanted to know if you were okay or if she could do something for you or your family. Her passion was people and taking care of all those in need. After the passing of her husband, she took pride in being a pet sitter for friends and neighbors. She genuinely cared for all living things. She was also passionate about her Irish and Polish heritage. She stayed in close contact with her classmates from Notre Dame and looked forward to their frequent luncheons. She was also active in the All Saints and ABC Catholic parishes for many years.
After raising her three children, she worked in public heath as a nurse, later settling in as the Director of Public Health for Schuyler County, NY. After retiring in 1998, she felt the need to continue to work in health care part time in many different roles. In 2000 she took a position as a nurse in Allergy with the Guthrie Clinic in Corning, NY and worked there until March of this year.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Regan of Astoria, NY; sons, Thomas (Terri Calhoun) Regan, Jr. of Spotsylvania, VA and Joseph Regan of Painted Post; sister-in-law, Ellen Regan of Horseheads, NY; nephew, Peter (Tona Jane Lokey) Mondesir of Gastonia, NC; many close cousins and family friends including her Watkins Glen and Guthrie coworkers and retired teachers from Corning West High School.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Regan, Sr.; father, Alfred Hussey; mother, Helen Hussey; and many beloved aunts, uncles and cousins.
