Thomas Cushing (Tom) Miller Jr., age 88, of Corning, NY, passed away on Tuesday, August 23, 2016, at his home surrounded by his family. Tom was born on November 2, 1927, in Corning, NY, to the late Thomas C. Miller Sr. and the late Doris M. (Ketchum) Miller. He attended St. Patrick's Catholic School and Corning Free Academy. Tom served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Japan during the occupation. After being Honorably Discharged in 1947 he married the love of his life, Florence E. (Cross) Miller. They spent an exceptional 69 love-filled years together. After pursuing a singing career in Chicago, Tom and his wife returned to Corning to start their family. Tom was then employed briefly at Ingersoll Rand before working for Corning Glass Works (Corning Incorporated) until retirement. During his time at Corning Inc. in Quality Control, Tom worked as a member of the Apollo Quality-Reliability team, where he approved the windows that were to be used in the successful Apollo 11 Lunar Mission. Tom had a passion for music, particularly the big band era, and he especially enjoyed the Glenn Miller Orchestra. He was an avid raccoon hunter with his father, and he spent his leisure time listening to music, watching the New York Mets, Notre Dame football, and westerns. Above everything else, his greatest joy in life was his family. Tom is survived by his wife, Florence; son, Stephen T. (Char) Miller of Emporia, KS; daughter, Colleen (Gary) Schrickel of Corning, NY; grandchildren, Jennifer (Noel) Connet, Rebecca (Will) Wilson, Schuyler Schrickel and great grandchildren, Corryn, Adalay, Brady, Austin, and Lily. Calling hours are 4-6 p.m. Friday, August 26th at Haughey Funeral Home, 216 E. First St., Corning. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, August 27th at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, 155 State St., Corning immediately followed by a graveside service at St. Mary's Cemetery on Park Avenue with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Thomas' name to Meals on Wheels, Corning, NY.
