Rose Mary Sweet, age 92, of Elma, NY and formerly of Washington Street in Corning, died Sunday, March 3, 2013 at her home in Elma. Rose was born on March 21, 1920 in Corning to Michael and Lillian (Jirovec) Walenta. She married Joseph Sweet in 1953 and was preceded in death by him in 2007. She was employed by Corning Glass Works, Corning, NY as a lab technician, and later became a homemaker. Rose was a communicant of All Saints Parish, and volunteered for the Heart Association, March of Dimes, Meals on Wheels and the American Cancer Society for many years. Rose is remembered as someone whose family was very important to her; she enjoyed spending time teaching them how to cook her favorite recipes and sharing stories about her life. She took pride in growing African Violets and collecting dolls. Rose was always interested in helping others, and she treasured her time spent with friends. Rose believed in the power of laughter and having fun, which helped her get through her health-related issues. Her greatest achievements have been in the lives of her family and friends. She had a unique gift to recognize the good in others and her kindness touched all she knew. Her generous heart filled her home with love, fun, family and friends. Rose leaves her children and grandchildren with the knowledge that they were truly loved. Her beautiful smile, the joy of her spirit, the twinkle in her eyes will be deeply missed along with her words of support and encouragement. She is survived by three daughters: Linda (Clayton) Tuttle of Corning, Susan Amundson of Ramona, California, and Joann (Mark) Russell of Holland, NY; two sisters: Lillian Ohls of Corning and Helen Mourhess of Wellsville; five grandchildren: Jeffery Rumsey, Elizabeth and Seth Tuttle, and Meghan and Hannah Russell; one great grandchild: Aislin Russell; and several nieces and nephews. Rose was predeceased by her two brothers, Charles and Joseph Walenta. Calling hours will be held on Thursday March 7th from 4 until 7 PM at Haughey Funeral Home, Inc. 216 East First Street in Corning. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday at 10:30 AM at St. Mary's Church on State Street in Corning.
