Robert J. Krebs, age 90, died Saturday, July 27, 2013 at Bethany Manor in Horseheads after a brief illness.\n\n\nHe was born March 6, 1923 and was a lifetime resident of Corning, a graduate of St. Mary's School and Corning Free Academy. He married Mary Jane Hause on June 21, 1947. They were married for 63 years as she preceded him in death on February 28, 2011.\n\n\nFor the past 3 years, Bob was a resident of Bethany Courtyards which allowed him to be surrounded by many friends and still have the freedom of his own assisted living apartment. He loved going to Lights for breakfast, The Central for a fish fry and Sunday dinner with his family. He exhibited great courage in his several illnesses, never complaining and always greeting you with a smile. He was fortunate to have attended both his granddaughters' weddings and played with his great grandsons up until the final days of his life. He also lived to see his grandson Tim graduate from Cornell Veterinary School. His presence will be greatly missed by the family.\n\n\nSurviving are sons: Thomas (Mary) Krebs of Elmira and Charles Krebs of Kohler, Wisconsin; granddaughters: Jennifer (Adam) Robinson and Megan (Eric) Schmidt; grandson Timothy Krebs; great grandsons: Colton Schmidt, Lucas and Liam Robinson.\n\n\nHe was a World War II Army veteran serving 3 years in the Pacific theater. Bob retired from Gates Rockwell after many years of service as Manager of the Men's Clothing Department. He was an active member of St. Mary's Parish, and was most proud of his service to the church as an Alter Server, Eucharistic Minister and member of the Building and Grounds Committee. Bob was also a lifetime member of the Corning Elks Lodge #1071, serving as Tiler for many years.\n\n\nCalling hours will be held on Wednesday, July 31st from 4 - 6 PM at Haughey Funeral Home, Inc., 216 E. First Street in Corning. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, August 1st at 10:00 AM at St. Mary's Church in Corning and burial will be in the family plot at St. Mary's Cemetery.\n\n\nMemorials may be made to St. Mary's Memorial Fund, 155 State Street, Corning, NY 14830 or to Care First, 11751 East Corning Road, Corning, NY 14830. \n\n\nThe family would like to thank the staff of Bethany and Care First for the compassionate care they showed him.\n\n\nBob's family has entrusted his care to Haughey Funeral Home, Inc. in Corning.
