Robert Downing, age 71, of East First Street in Corning died Friday, November 8, 2013 at Corning Hospital following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.\n\nBob was born on October 23, 1942 in Corning to Adrian and Eleanor (Mullen) Downing, Sr. Bob graduated from Corning Free Academy in 1961 having wrestled on the school team. After high school, he was employed as a machinist at Corning Inc. for 51 years with both active and retired service. He enjoyed golf, horseshoes, bowling and watching TV especially Matlock, old movies and WWF. Bob enjoyed making people laugh with his jokes. He also loved to dine out and to go the movies. Most of all he loved to visit with his grandchildren.\n\nBob was a member of John P. Eaton Post of the American Legion, Corning Elks, and Moose. \n\nHe is survived by daughter, Angela (Regis) Stiffler of Tucson, AZ; son, Robert (Nancy) Downing Jr. of Corning; grandchildren, Robert and Ariana Benjamin, Brian Stiffler, and Kylie Downing; brother, Adrian (Lee Ellen) Downing, Jr. of Corning; a sister, Eleanor (Jack) Black of Corning; brother-in-law, Gary Johnson of Corning; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; former wife, Jo Ann Estep; very special friends, Sharon Abbott, Helen Conklin, and Marty Heidrich; and his Crystal Lanes family. \n\nBob was predeceased by his parents; sisters, Kim Johnson and Barbara Hilton; and a grandson, Regis W. Stiffler.\n\nCalling hours will be held on Tuesday, November 12th from 1-3 and 6-8 at Haughey Funeral Home, Inc., 216 E. First Street, Corning where the funeral will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, November 13th. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery in Corning.\n\nMemorial donations may be made to the SPCA or to the American Cancer Society.\n\nBob's family has entrusted his care to Haughey Funeral Home, Inc.
