Nellie Maio

Nellie Gray Maio, 83, of Painted Post, NY passed away with her family by her side on July 14, 2022.

Nellie was born on December 11, 1938 in Little Marsh, PA and was the daughter of Gordon and Mina (Rockwell) King.

She attended school in Middlebury, PA.

On December 19, 1957, at St. Mary's Church in Corning, NY, she married Louis J. Maio who was the love of her life. Louis preceded her in death on May 5, 2004.

Nellie previously worked for the Corning-Painted Post School District as a crossing guard at Calvin U. Smith Elementary School. She also worked for many years taking care of the elderly and in numerous restaurants as kitchen prep.

She was a member of All Saints Parish and was strong in her Catholic faith.

Nellie enjoyed cooking and playing cards, but more than anything she loved spending time with her family. Nellie was a mother to all and was the mother of the Riverside neighborhood.

She is survived by sons, Louis A. Maio of Corning and Thomas Maio of Painted Post; daughters, Bonnie (Ron) Horton of Missouri, Antonia Maio of Corning, Cecelia Maio (Marlo) of Rochester, NY, Christine (Bob) Pygott of Bath, NY, Jennifer Maio (Shannon) of Smithfield, VA, Katherine (Don) Peterson of Lindley, NY and Cherrie Maio (Rich) of Corning, NY; sister, Georgia Smithers of Mansfield, PA; 19 grandchildren: Eric, Brandon, Cassie, Tyler, Ondrea, Kevin, Kyle, Cody, Brittanie, Gavin, Graysen, Jaden, Christopher, Dominick, Donny, Megan, Angelena, Samantha and Gracie; and 23 great-grandchildren.

Nellie is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Louis J. Maio; sons, Jimmy and David Maio; sisters, Geraldine M. Roosa and Donna King; brothers, Ernie and Bobby King.

A public visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 19, 2022 from 3-6PM at Haughey Funeral Home, Inc., 216 E. First St. in Corning. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at 9:30AM at St. Mary's Church, 155 State St. in Corning with Father Patrick Connor officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Corning.
