Naomi Esther (Travis) Dunning

–

Painted Post, NY

Naomi Esther (Travis) Dunning of Painted Post, NY, walked into the loving arms of her Savior the morning of April 10, 2025, at the age of 94.

Born on September 11, 1930 to Carl and Sarah (Fish) Travis, Naomi began a life journey defined by a passion to love others in her own determined way. She was a member of the Northside High School graduating class of 1950. Naomi followed a calling to attend Practical Bible Training School with her future husband, Andrew Dunning of Lindley, NY. She lived an unstoppable life through owning her own car, transporting herself and many others to college and back, and holding a job at Corning Glass Works.

She married Andrew on June 15, 1957, surrounded by family and friends. Shortly thereafter, Naomi and Andrew welcomed their only son, Jeffrey Dunning. Never one to sit idly by, Naomi remained active as a lifetime member of North Baptist Church in Corning, NY, serving on the Ladies Missionary Fellowship and as the Sunday School secretary.

Some of her favorite pastimes included watching the Yankees—especially her favorite baseball player, Mickey Mantle—and listening to Southern Gospel quartets. Naomi was characterized by her love and care of others. Always the first person to welcome visiting missionaries, she ensured all needs were met before they continued on their way. Her family and friends share fond memories of Naomi playing the flute and singing in church and at her home in Riverside. Every oatmeal bar baked, every sweater, afghan, and baby outfit knitted, and every dollar slipped into hands and pockets testified to the care she held for those she loved. This care even extended to the neighborhood squirrels, cats, and birds for whom she always had extra food on hand. She held tightly to her favorite verse, 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” To know Naomi was to know her desire to be present with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, whom she now sees face to face.

Naomi is survived by her husband of 67 years, Andrew Dunning; son, Jeffrey and Bonnie (Fleming) Dunning; sister, Ruth (Travis) Head; sisters-in-law, Joyce Travis and Rosemary (Dunning) Finnefrock; brother-in-law, Harry Finnefrock; grandchildren: Amy (Dunning) and Adam Shuey, Travis and Jenna (Duell) Dunning, Benjamin and ReBekah (Farrand) Dunning, Jennifer (Dunning) and Jeffery Simpson, Stephanie (Dunning) and Mitchell Carr, Daniel Dunning, and Erin (Dunning) and Carter Calkins; great-grandchildren: Dane, Lylah, Arlo, Kellan, Abigail, Keanu, Hailey, Elliott, and Lucille; many friends and family; and her favorite dog, Harper.

Naomi was predeceased by her parents, Carl and Sarah (Fish) Travis; brother, Rev. Paul A. Travis; parents-in-law, Lawrence and Josephine (Soule) Dunning; sisters-in-law, Linda Travis, Leona Dunning, Dora (Dunning) Keeney, and Maude (Guilds) Dunning; and brothers-in-law, William Head, Lyle Keeney, and Lawrence Dunning.

The family will host Calling hours at North Baptist Church, 127 Sly Avenue in Corning on Friday, April 18, 2025, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, with a Celebration of Life service to follow with Pastor John Bennett officiating. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery in Corning.

In remembrance of Naomi’s life, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Missionary Fund at North Baptist Church.
