Madeline Mary Knapp Madeline (Matsie) Mary Knapp, age 95, of Simpsonville, SC, formerly of Corning and Painted Post, NY died Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at Hospice of the Upstate in Anderson, SC with her two sons, Gene and Robert at her bedside. \n\n\nMadeline was born July 20, 1921 in Corning, NY to Clement and Augusta (Walter) Murphy. She married Eugene J. Knapp on May 29, 1943 at St. Mary's Church in Corning. She was a graduate of Corning Free Academy and a 1942 graduate of Nazareth College in Rochester, NY. Her career began as a Caseworker employed by Elmira Catholic Charities. Later, she realized immense enjoyment being a full-time mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Madeline's interests centered especially on community service with Meals on Wheels, Corning Hospital Chapter L, Cub Scouts and church volunteer work. She and her husband Gene also had an appetite for a wide variety of overseas travel to experience and to cultivate an appreciation for different cultures. However, by far the greatest treasure of all was being anywhere with her immediate and extended family, particularly at the family cottage, "Windfall", on Keuka Lake. \n\n\nShe is survived by her two sons: Gene (Jane) Knapp, and Robert (Virginia) Knapp; one sister, Joan Murphy and one brother, Richard Murphy; she also has six grandchildren: Kara (Chris) Tufts, Heather (Otis) Gibson, Robert (Heather) Knapp, Heidi (Steve) Burnett, Ryan (Sara) Knapp and Michael (Jasmine) Knapp; and ten great-grandchildren, Emma & Jackson Knapp, Spencer, Madeline and Lily Burnett, Charlie and Olivia Knapp, Abigail and Claire Knapp, and Rosalie Tufts; plus several nieces and nephews who she loved dearly. Madeline was predeceased by her husband, Eugene (2015); brother, John (Elizabeth) Murphy; and son, Clement Knapp. \n\n\nBurial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Corning on Tuesday, January 17th at 9:00 AM. A memorial brunch will be served at the Radisson Hotel immediately following the burial service. \n\n\nMadeline's family entrusted her care to Haughey Funeral Home, Inc.
