Larry L. Gerwig Obituary (1925 - 2023)

Larry Locuson Gerwig, 97, of Corning, NY passed away peacefully on January 29, 2023 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY. Larry was born on December 29, 1925 in Philadelphia, PA, the son of Mark Albert Gerwig and Pauline M. (Locuson) Gerwig. He was raised in North Hills, PA, graduated from Abington High School, and then graduated from Penn State College, School of Engineering in 1949, where he was a member of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. He married Arlene (Sweetland) Gerwig on August 3, 1984. He was employed as a mechanical engineer at International Nickel in Sudbury, Ontario and Bendix Aviation before joining Corning Glass Works, where he retired in 1987 after 32 years of service. Larry lived his life with humility, a pleasant manner and a smile. He was a chess player and an avid reader. He was fond of classical music and musical theatre, having assisted with stage productions while a member of Corning Workshop Players. Larry loved being outdoors, which included skiing, bicycling (including tours), hiking and sailing. He was a member of Keuka Yacht Club since 1952 and was their treasurer for 20 of those years. He especially enjoyed being with family and friends at the lake cottage, where he was always working on a project. Larry is survived by his wife of 38 years, Arlene (Sweetland) Gerwig; sons, David (Barbara) Gerwig of Louisville, KY and Daniel (Kathryn) Gerwig of Painted Post, NY; grandsons, Brian and Paul; granddaughters: Kimberly, Elizabeth and Claire; and brother, Bruce (Inger-Johanne). He was predeceased by his wife, Priscilla (Pratt) Gerwig, mother of David and Daniel; and stepson, Randall. At Larry's request, there will be no prior calling hours or formal funeral service.
