Judith Mae Cowden, age 73, formerly of Syracuse, Owego, and Painted Post, NY died Saturday, July 9, 2016 at Darway Elder Care in Forksville, PA. \n\n\nJudy was born on March 26, 1943 in Jamestown, NY to Willis and Dorothy (Pope) Cowden. She was a graduate of Nottingham High School in Syracuse, NY and received her Bachelor's Degree in Education from SUNY Oswego.\n\n\nJudy worked as an elementary school teacher in Omaha, Nebraska before returning to Syracuse where she became a social worker and worked for several years in Child Protective Services and Intensive Case Management. She retired from Elmira Psychiatric Center as an Intensive Case Manager for youth at risk.\n\n\nJudy was an avid nature lover and especially enjoyed walks in the woods with friends. Her other interests included singing in the church choir, reading, gardening, but most important to her was being a beloved grandmother. She was always full of hugs for each of her grandchildren and somehow made each feel as if they were her favorite.\n\n\nShe is survived by her loving daughter, Deborah (Thomas) Beall of Painted Post; son, Scott Maloney of Tampa, FL; brothers, David Cowden of Marathon, NY and Richard (Patty) Cowden of San Francisco, CA; grandchildren, Jonathan, Kaley, Lauren, Ryan, and Leah; and by an aunt, Betty Rink of Venice, FL.\n\n\nCalling hours will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 144 Cedar Street in Corning on Monday, July 18, 2016 from 1 until 3 PM where funeral services will follow at 3:00 PM with Reverend Constance Seifert officiating.\n\n\nThe family will provide flowers and ask that memorials be made in Judith's name to the Alzheimer's Association, 435 East Henrietta Road, Rochester, NY 14620.\n\n\nJudith's family entrusted her care to Haughey Funeral Home, Inc. in Corning, NY.
