John E. Semple, age 87, of Lower Pace Road in Corning, NY died Friday, February 5, 2016 at home with his family at his side.\n\n\nJohn was born on March 22, 1928 in Corning to Samuel and Beatrice (Schoonover) Semple. He married Martha Phillips on May 6, 1946 in Wellsboro, PA and was preceded in death by her on February 1, 2009. John served in the United States Army form 1946-1949 and retired from the Reserves in 1988. He was a member of the Local 1000, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and the Retired Sergeant Majors Association. John was a Past President of the Town of Erwin Senior Citizens, a life member of the Lindley-Presho Volunteer Fire Department and attended Victory Highway Wesleyan Church. He loved camping, travelling, reading, fixing small engines, loved his dogs, and reading westerns. He was well known for passing out candy and gold dollar coins to children everywhere. He retired in 1985 as a machinist from Corning Glass Works. \n\n\nHe is survived by his two sons, Harold (Mary Jane) Semple of Lindley, NY and James (Elaine West) Semple of Corning, NY; grandchildren, Stephanie (Michael) Provo of Baldwinsville, NY and Shawn Semple of Bath; great grandchildren Morgan and Tyler Provo; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins. John was preceded in death by his brother James Semple.\n\n\nCalling hours will be held on Monday February 8th from 1-3 and 5-7 PM at Haughey Funeral Home, Inc. 216 East First Street in Corning where funeral services will follow at 7:00 PM.
