Ellen R. "Nellie" Dowd

Ellen "Nellie" R. Dowd, age 82, of Corning, NY passed away on Sunday, August 21, 2016 peacefully in the company of her family at the United Methodist Home in Johnson City, NY. Nellie was born on October 23, 1933, in Liverpool, England, a daughter of the late Henry and Margaret Nesbitt Matthews. She was predeceased by her husband, Peter Dowd in 2006; brothers and sister, Bob, May, Henry, and Jimmy. After her mother passed at a young age, Nellie was raised since the age of 8 by her mother' sister, the late Florence (Richard) Jones.

Surviving is her children with spouses, Paul and Claire Dowd of Virginia Beach, VA, Linda and Greg Miller of Corning, NY, Peter Jr. and Lisa Dowd of Horseheads, NY and Anthony Dowd of Elmira; grandchildren, Jonathan (Kelli) Keegan, Keith (Kim) Keegan, Jessica (Connie) Dowd-Tallett, Michelle Keegan, Lindsay (Christopher) Gathmann, Olivia (Brandon) Lewis, Aaron (Angela) Dowd, Hailey (Casey) Grant, and Jon (Katelynn) Stuart); great grandchildren, Ryder, Hudson, Camdyn, Nora, Piper, Hoyt, Easton, Olivia, Caleb, Paige, Jacob, Maxwell, Reese, Ava, Kaitlyn, Madelyn, Kylie and also expected in September 2016, Cannon; many nieces and nephews including Margaret Cosgrove and family, Theresa Holden and family in England.

She married her husband in 1956 and celebrated 50 wonderful years. Together with their family they immigrated to the United States from England in November of 1975 to start their new lives. She loved spending time with her family, her love of bingo and scratch off lottery tickets with the plan to treat each and everyone with the winnings if she won. Nellie retired from the Corning Museum of Glass as a cafeteria manager.

In honoring her wishes private family services will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations in Nellie's memory can be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Alz.org.

Nellie's family has entrusted her care to Haughey Funeral Home, Inc.
