Alice Winifred (Freddie) Turchick, age 89, of Dataw Island, South Carolina, formerly of Foster Road in Corning, NY died Monday, November 9, 2015 at Beaufort Memorial Hospital, Beaufort, SC. \n\n\nBorn on November 7, 1926 in Coalport, PA, Freddie was the daughter of James Adolph and Pearl Marie (Drass) Thomas. She was a graduate of Coalport -Irvona High School in 1945 and married Joseph Turchick on December 29, 1947 in Coalport, PA. She was predeceased by her husband on August 16, 2005. \n\n\nFreddie was a strong, generous woman and the best mother in the world. She took care of her four children and, by example, showed them how to be good people. She was an artist, a seamstress, a needle work artist and a master quilter. She was a founding member of the Corning Quilt Guild and the Elmira Quilt Guild and a member of the Dataw Island Quilters and the Happy Hands Needlework group in SC. She was honored at the Elmira Quilt show in April as a charter member of their group. Several of her quilts were displayed to the public at that show. Her quilts earned many ribbons over the years at various quilt shows. She loved babies and for the last 20 years made layettes, gowns, hats and booties for the babies in the NICU unit of Arnot Ogden Hospital in Elmira, NY and the Birthing Center at Beaufort Memorial Hospital in Beaufort, SC. \n\n\nShe contributed several hundred quilted items and needlework items to children and charity boutiques during her lifetime. She was a Girl Scout Leader and worked with a wonderful group of ladies who still get together for lunch occasionally. Freddie had a great wit and a beautiful smile that made her blue eyes twinkle. She was a special lady and loved by all who knew her. She touched many people during her lifetime and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. \n\n \n\nShe is survived by her daughters, Ann (Joel) Holden of Dataw Island, SC and Patricia (David) Engelhardt of Farmington, CT; two sons, Joseph Turchick, Jr. of Bellefonte, PA and David (Nancy) Turchick of Memphis, TN; grandchildren, Emily Engelhardt; Ryan and Daniel Turchick; and several nieces and nephews. Freddie was predeceased by her brothers, Donald, Richard and John Thomas; and a sister, Patricia Wheeling.\n\n\nCalling hours will be held on Friday, November 20th from 6 - 7:30 PM at Haughey Funeral Home, Inc., 216 E. First Street in Corning where services will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, November 21st. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.\n\n\nMemorial donations may be made in Freddie's name to Beaufort Memorial Hospital, 955 Ribaut Road, Beaufort, SC 29902.\n\n\nFreddie's family entrusted her care to Haughey Funeral Home, Inc.
