Obituary of Elaine Acomb

Elaine M. Acomb, age 92, of Gang Mills, died Monday, July 31, 2017 at home. Elaine was born November 16, 1924 in Hornell, NY to George and Alta (Howe) Glover. She married Franklin Acomb in 1944, they were married for 62 years. Frank predeceased her in 2006.

Elaine went to Arkport Central School, Breens Business School, and Del Kadar School of Costmetology. She opened up a beauty shop and operated it for 45 years.

Elaine had many interests and won many awards for the many hours she volunteered in the community. She volunteered at the Corning Museum of Glass, a Docent at Rockwell Museum, LPGA, Corning Hospital, Founders Pavilion, Patterson Inn, Girl Scouts, Cancer and Heart Assoc. She was president of Quota International Service Club, which helped hearing impaired children world-wide. While she was president of Quota Club, they raised money to buy a therapy dog for a hearing impaired little girl, bought a device to check hearing for the new born for a local hospital, bought many TTY's for many individuals who could not afford them on their own, as well schools, businesses and hotels. She was elected Governor of Quotas in the 17th District of Quota International. While she was Governor, she received the Key to the City of Corning, Letter of Merit from the Supervisor of the Town of Erwin and Mayor of Painted Post. While Governor of Quota club, she asked each member to do random acts of kindness each week, such as calling someone, sending cards, giving cookies, etc. She was past president of Pricilla's Club, Corning Ares Woman's Club, and a member of the Red Hats. Elaine and Frank also enjoyed hosting a Fresh Air child for several years. Elaine and Frank loved to travel extensively in Europe and the United States including Hawaii and Alaska.

Elaine was an avid reader, reading a book a week many on politics. She was an amazing cook. Each year at Christmas she baked over 3000 cookies, which she gave to family and friends. She gave many to friends in nursing homes that were unable to bake for themselves. Elaine dearly loved her family and they dearly loved her and will miss her so very much as will her many good friends.

She is survived by daughter, Suzette Simmons of Painted Post, NY and son, Steven C. Acomb of Painted Post, NY; four grandsons: George and Matthew Simmons and Frank and Josh Acomb, two great grandsons, Gregory and Corbin Simmons.

At her request, there will be no calling hours and burial will be at the convenience of the family.
