Obituary of Pamela Hertl

Pamela Hertl, age 78, of Brookdale Senior Living in Painted, Post, NY, died Saturday, April 29, 2017 at Guthrie Corning Hospital.  Pamela was born on May 9, 1938 in Great Shelford, Cambridge, England to Harry and Evelyn (Francis) Rider. She grew up in Sawston, Cambridge, England.  She worked as a Registered Nurse in London, Cambridge, New York City and Corning Hospital.

She married Dr. William Hertl on September 19, 1964 in Sawston, and they settled in Corning where their daughter Julia was born. From 1970-1972, Bill took a sabbatical leave from Corning Glass Works and they moved to Merida,  Venezuela, where their son David was born.  The family returned to Corning in March 1972, three months before the Flood.

Pam was very active in Christ Episcopal Church in Corning, serving as a Sunday School teacher and on the Altar Guild and Card Ministry.  She also volunteered for WSKG, Red Cross blood banks and as a Cub Scout Den Leader. 

Pam and Bill enjoyed traveling in the U.S., as well as many countries in Europe, South America and Africa. She later enjoyed going on cruises with her family to Alaska, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and across the Atlantic.

In 2013, Pam moved to Brookdale in Painted Post, where she was much beloved by staff and residents alike. She greatly enjoyed all the activities there, especially Hangman, Trivia and Bingo. 

She was predeceased by her husband Bill in 2007, parents Harry (1994) and Eve (1996) and brother-in-law Paul (2012).

Survivors include her daughter Julia Hertl of Ithaca, NY; son, David (Jennifer) Hertl of Pickerington, OH; sisters, Christine Rider of Flushing, NY and Helen (Graham) Hopkins of Duxford, Cambridge, England; brother, John (Sara) Rider of Enfield, London, England; two grandsons, Alexander and Brady Hertl; several nieces and nephews and many friends.  Pam will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

A Memorial Service of Celebration will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, 39 East First Street in Corning on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 2pm, the Rev. Kit Tobin officiating. Interment will take place at a later date in Sawston, Cambridge,  England where she will be laid to rest with Bill.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, Planned Parenthood or a charity of one's choice.

The family would like to thank the caring staff at Brookdale, Dr. Akula, Dr. Pulkrabek, Dr. Hathwar, and Corning Hospital for the excellent care she received over the last few years.
