Eleanore May VanEtten, age 99, of Corning, died Friday, February 9, 2018 at Absolut Care at Three Rivers in Painted Post, NY.
Eleanore was born in Corning on January 16, 1919, to Gerald and Hattie (Scouten) Davis. On May 24, 1940, she married Maynard VanEtten, who predeceased her on July 22, 2006.
Eleanore was manager of the Evergreen Motel in East Corning for many years. All of the children from East Corning loved her! They called her the “Candy Lady.” There was a school bus stop in front of her home and when the weather was bad, she would open the front door and tell the kids to take cover under the carport and she would bring them hot chocolate. When she and her husband, Maynard, entered retirement, they conducted tours for the Senior Citizens Bus Tours for Corning Glass Works for many years. Eleanore loved bowling and didn’t stop bowling until the age of 93. She was a very active, life-long member of Calvary Baptist Church in Gibson, where she organized their dinners. Eleanore was a member of the Lioness Club and Corning Senior Citizens. She was kindhearted and would readily help others in need.
Eleanore is survived by her daughter, Kathleen (Ronald) Begell of Corning; brother, Gerald Davis of Corning; grandchildren, Mark (Patty) VanEtten, Kimberly (Nick) Mislevy, Darci VanEtten, Dee Jay VanEtten, Joe (Natalie) Woodward, Nori K. Herrick, and Jennifer (Jarrod) Powers; several great and great great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
