Donald L. Cunningham, age 86, of Corning, went home to the Lord on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 surrounded by his loving wife of 65 years, children and grandchildren. Donald was a much-loved husband, adored father, cherished grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, brother, brother-in-law, and friend.
Don was born on January 15, 1932 in Lanark, IL to Joseph and Dorothy L. (Tomman) Cunningham. He married Joanne Shepard on April 18, 1953 in St. Mary's Church in Corning, New York. He served in the US Air Force from 1950 to 1954. While in the Air Force he lived in Wiesbaden, Germany and earned the rank of Staff Sergeant.
He was employed by Steuben Medical, Corning in the accounting department. He also worked for many years at the Horseheads A&P food processing plant beginning as a production line worker and progressing to a buyer for the spice department.
Don enjoyed a good game of Euchre and was an avid bowler for many years winning several individual and team awards while on the Cunningham Barber Shop team. He was also a volunteer for Meals on Wheels with his wife, Joanne. Interests included non-fiction reading, John Wayne movies, spending time with his wife, family, beloved pet, and cheering on the Chicago Bears. Donald was a life-time member of the Corning Elks and All Saints Parish. Awards included being nominated, and winning every year, the Father of the Year by his family members.
He is survived by his wife, Joanne; two daughters, Peggy (Margaret) (Robert) Morgan of Millville, NJ and Laurie (Eric) Soehnlein of Elmira; four sons, Shaun (Donna) Cunningham of Corning, Martin Cunningham of Corning, Kevin Cunningham of Corning, and Brian (Carol) Cunningham of Corning; fifteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sheila and Gene Brautigan, along with special family members, Marcia Cunningham of Corning and Jeannine Rinck of Tuckahoe, NJ; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved canine friend, Teddy. Don was predeceased by his eldest daughter, Cathleen Cunningham, as well as siblings, Keith, Stan, Tom, Gale, and Shirley.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, January 24th from 3 until 5 PM at Haughey Funeral Home, Inc., 216 East First St., Corning where funeral services will follow at 5:00 PM. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Corning at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made in Don’s name to Steuben County SPCA.
