Thomas Francis Galvin, age 88, passed away Friday, December 15, 2017 at Absolut Care at Three Rivers in Painted Post, NY. Tom was born December 3, 1929 in Corning, NY to the late John and Mary (Hogan) Galvin. He married Lorraine M. Lepkoske on September 5, 1953 in Elmira, NY.
Tom was a 1952 graduate of Niagara University, earning a degree in Business Administration. He served two years of active duty in the United States Army, stationed in Tokyo, Japan. Following his honorable discharge, he entered the Army Reserve, retiring in 1975 at the rank of Major.
Upon his return to Corning from Japan, he joined his aunt Mary Gernon to form the Gernon-Galvin Insurance Agency. In 1967, he partnered with the late Wilson Haines to form Galvin & Haines Insurance where he worked until his retirement in 1992.
He is survived by daughter, Kathleen (Lea Harvey) Galvin of Falls Church, VA and son, Thomas (Anne) Galvin of Painted Post; grandsons, Jack and Mason Galvin; sister, Ellen Galvin of Rochester, NY and brothers, James Galvin of Bath and Robert (Mary Ellen) Galvin of Painted Post. He is also survived by brothers-in-law, Thomas and Richard Lepkoske of Elmira; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Tom was predeceased by his sweet Lorraine in 2008, and by his sons, Michael and Matthew; sister, Margaret Galvin, and sister-in-law, Geraldine Galvin.
During his years at Corning Free Academy, Tom was a standout athlete, earning multiple varsity letters in football, track and field, basketball and volleyball. As quarterback of the Bulldogs, he led a team that suffered only one defeat in his three years as a starter. In 2016 he was inducted into the Corning-Painted Post Sports Hall of Fame thanks to the efforts of his grandson Mason, who completed the application and research process as part of a school project.
In later years, Tom became an avid golfer, and he and Lorraine enjoyed many years playing golf together at Indian Hills Golf Club. He was a loving and kind husband, father, grandfather, and a well-respected figure on Market Street in Corning.
Calling hours are 4-6 PM on Friday, January 5, 2018 at Haughey Funeral Home, Inc., 216 E. First Street, Corning. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on January 6, 2018 at 10 AM at St. Mary's Church, State Street, Corning, NY. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Park Avenue, Corning following the service.
