George L. Mayer, age 90, of Caton Road in Corning, NY died Friday, November 24, 2017 at home surrounded by his loving family.
George was born on June 23, 1927 in Corning to Frank and Edith (Bolderson) Mayer. He married Shirley Bates on June 3, 1950 at the First Presbyterian Church in Corning and was predeceased by her in 2010.
He was a graduate of Painted Post High School (1945) and served in the United States Navy during World War II. George had worked for an upholstery business after the war then went into apprentice school and worked for the IBEW Local # 139 in Elmira as an electrician. He was a life member of the Big Flats American Legion #1612. George loved woodworking and tinkering in his shop on all kinds of projects.
His survivors include a son, Gregory (Kathryn) Mayer of Apache Junction, AZ; several nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by three sisters, Betty Berlue, Doris Coats, and Ruth Dersham.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday, December 2nd from 10 – 12 PM at Haughey Funeral Home, Inc., 216 E. First Street in Corning where funeral services will follow at Noon. Burial and military honors will be in Hope Cemetery in Corning.
